The 35-year-old woman met him through a friendly movie-going group in May 2010 and quickly got close.
The man described himself as having graduated from the economics departments of a leading private university in Seoul, was working for a trading company and had an apartment in Sillim-dong in southern Seoul.
They dated until March last year then got married in July.
Living in a rented apartment in Gyepo-dong in southern Seoul in January, the man suddenly called home to say that he has to go on a trip to Japan.
The following day, she received a call saying that her husband is under suspicion of trafficking drungs, and that she should check things out.
She called the police, airport authorities and the Foreign Ministry and found out that her husband never left the country for Japan. She in fact reported him missing.
She also made calls to the company that her husband allegedly was working for and there was no record. He had no record of income or medical insurance.
The more shocking thing was that he subscribed to a number of insurance policies to illegally pick up the payoff and was placed under arrest in court under a two-year sentence on Jan. 11. It was a day before he told his wife that he was going on the trip to Japan.
His brother asked the woman if she can raise 30 million won ($27,000) for settlement. She tried to get the key money on their apartment but was told that they were on monthly rent with no down payment.
The woman took the case to court and was awarded a compensation of 67 million won ($60,000), including money spent on their wedding.

보험사기 구속되면서도 '출장'… 들통나 억대 배상금
학력, 직장, 재산 등 모든 것을 속이고 결혼했다가, 결혼 전에 저지른 사기 행각으로 법정구속되면서 실체가 드러난 남성이 부인에게 이혼 당하고 거액의 배상금까지 물어주게 됐다.
A(35)씨는 2010년 5월 영화관람 동호회에서 만난 연하남 B(33)씨와 자연스럽게 친분을 쌓았다. B씨는 '서울 소재 유명 사립대 경제학과를 졸업하고 무역회사에 다니고 있으며, 서울 신림동에 집도 한 채 있다'고 자신을 소개했다. 급속히 가까워진 이들은 지난해 3월 가족 상견례를 하고 7개월 후 결혼했다.
서울 개포동의 전셋집에서 신혼 생활을 하던 지난 1월, 출근했던 남편 B씨는 A씨에게 전화를 걸어 '갑자기 일본 출장을 가게 됐다'고 말했다. 다음날 시댁 식구로부터 'B가 출장 중 마약 사범으로 의심을 받게 됐으니 회사나 친구들의 연락처를 알아봐 달라'는 내용의 전화를 받은 A씨는 깜짝 놀라 파출소, 인천공항, 외교통상부에 전화를 걸어 남편의 출입국 사항을 확인했다. 그런데 출국 기록이 나오지 않았다. 급기야 A씨는 남편에 대해 행방불명 신고까지 했다.
A씨는 남편의 직장 연락처를 구하기 위해 건강보험관리공단 등에 가입 상황을 물어봤으나 남편은 보험에 가입하지도 않았고 소득신고도 한 적 없는 무직 상태로 드러났다
A씨의 추궁을 받은 시아주버니가 털어놓은 진상은 더욱 충격적이었다. B씨가 보험을 잔뜩 가입한 뒤 고의로 사고를 내는 보험사기를 저질러 지난 1월11일 징역2년을 선고받고 법정구속됐다는 것이었다. 남편이 일본 출장을 간다던 바로 그날이었다.
'합의금 3,000만원을 구해줄 수 없겠느냐'는 시아주버니의 요청에 A씨는 전세보증금이라도 빼 쓰기 위해 집 주인에게 알아봤으나 남편이 전셋집이라던 신혼집은 월세인 것으로 드러났다. 학력은 물론 신림동에 집이 있다는 남편의 말까지 모두 거짓말로 드러나자 A씨는 B씨를 상대로 소송을 냈다.
서울가정법원 가사합의5부(부장 이태수)는 A씨가 B씨를 상대로 낸 이혼 청구소송에서 '혼인을 취소하고, B씨는 위자료 5,000만원과 결혼비용 등 6,700여만원을 A씨에게 지급하라'며 원고 일부 승소 판결했다고 25일 밝혔다.
